IGF Signs Cooperation Agreement with APEC Mining Task Force

May 17, 2017

We are pleased to announce that the IGF has signed a three-year cooperation agreement with the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Mining Task Force (MTF).

“As a centre of expertise and a key venue for global dialogue on mining sector good governance, partnership with the Intergovernmental Forum (IGF) is recognized by the APECT MTF as holding significant potential for mutually beneficial cooperation to advance shared goals and objectives,” APEC said in a joint statement of intent.

This is the first time that the MTF has entered into a formal partnership with an external partner.

Our first project will be to assist with the implementation of the MTF’s mine closure checklist for governments in an IGF member country.

APEC is in the process of developing the checklist, which will be presented in October at the IGF’s Annual General Meeting in Geneva.

The checklist will serve to:

  • Assess the host government policy framework pertaining to mine closure
  • Identify key issues to be addressed
  • Develop a strategy to address identified issues based on international best practices

IGF Director Greg Radford and APEC Mining Task Force Chair Rodrigo Urquiza formally signed the cooperation agreement on May 10 at a ceremony during APEC’s annual meeting in Vietnam.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to help APEC implement its objectives,” Radford said.  “We hope this will lead to more collaboration in the future.”
