Message from the Director
Welcome to the first IGF newsletter since the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) took over Secretariat duties. It is part of a broader strategy to engage more deeply with members and stakeholders as we strive to implement new initiatives.
We are heading into an exciting period for the IGF. The Canadian government has infused the organization with the funds necessary to expand our impact and reach.
The Secretariat is working hard to prepare for the Annual General Meeting in October. We are planning four new Mining Policy Framework (MPF) country assessments, have refreshed the IGF logo and are in the process of redesigning the website.
Please see below for some highlights of our activities.

2016 Annual General Meeting
We are pleased to announce that the theme for the upcoming Annual General Meeting will be Sustainable Development Goals and Mining. The AGM is scheduled for October 24–28 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. Please note that the first day of the conference is scheduled for government representatives only.
Watch your inbox in the coming weeks for a formal invitation and updates on the agenda and registration.
The Secretariat hopes that you like our new logo and is pleased to report that IGF will have a redesigned website launched in the coming weeks. The new website will be easier to navigate and have a fresh, modern look. It will also include resources such as guidance documents and reports along with all the information you will need for the October AGM in Geneva.
We are in the midst of conducting a Mining Policy Framework (MPF) Assessment for Senegal. The assessment included a tour of the world’s largest dredge mineral sands operations. We were pleased to see that cashew trees are being used for both mine rehabilitation and improving local livelihoods at the dredge site: an example of the benefits of community engagement.
The IGF Secretariat is currently scheduling MPF Assessments in Suriname, Mongolia and Burkina Faso. Watch for details in the coming newsletters.
If you are attending UNCTAD 14 in Nairobi please look for the IGF Secretariat. We will be hosting a lunch session introducing the IGF during the Global Commodities Forum on July 15. There will also be an IGF booth in the Global Commodities Hub exhibition space.

We would like to thank everyone who completed the survey following last year’s AGM. Here are some of the issues and ideas identified in the 2015 that we are working into our plans for the upcoming AGM. We plan to initiate a new survey prior to the 2016 AGM and look forward to receiving feedback from members.
