Mining is often left out of conversations about sustainable development, but a dedicated group of people is working to ensure that the impacts of mining are reduced and that the benefits are shared. The IGF offers member governments the opportunity to have their policies, laws and regulations assessed by experts.
Suriname is actively working to leverage its mining industry to advance sustainable development, according to a Mining Policy Framework assessment published by the IGF.
The IGF has signed a three-year cooperation agreement with the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Mining Task Force. Our first project will be to assist with the implementation of the Task Force’s mine closure checklist. IGF member Papua New Guinea has volunteered to test the checklist in a pilot program.
