The Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF) and the Canadian International Resources and Development Institute (CIRDI) announced this week the signing of an MOU to enhance collaboration to promote the sustainable development of mineral and natural resources for the benefit of people, governments and countries around the world.
“The IGF is devoted to optimizing the benefits on mining to achieve poverty reduction, inclusive growth, social development and environmental stewardship,” said Greg Radford, Director of IGF. “Signing an MOU with CIRDI helps us achieve this goal.”
The partnership will foster knowledge sharing, access to experts, and opportunities for activities and events.
“CIRDI and the IGF have worked together on a number of international projects where we’ve combined our respective strengths and experience,” said Rob Stevens, CIRDI’s Director of Partnerships and Learning. “We complement each other very well in our efforts to support the sustainable development of mineral resources in developing countries.”
The MOU will also provide the opportunity to coordinate activities when both parties are working in the same country, and further identify opportunities for collaboration. As the first deliverable from the MOU, CIRDI will collaborate with the IGF on a regional workshop on managing the artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sector being hosted by the Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Energy and Mines the week of June 25, 2018.

The IGF is an international government forum that supports close to 70 nations committed to leveraging mining for sustainable development to ensure that negative impacts are limited and financial benefits are shared. It is devoted to optimizing the benefits of mining to achieve poverty reduction, inclusive growth, social development and environmental stewardship. The International Institute for Sustainable Development has served as Secretariat for the IGF since October 2015. Core funding is provided by the Government of Canada.
CIRDI is an independent centre of expertise in natural resource-led development. We work at the request of developing country governments that seek to strengthen their capacity to govern and manage their natural resources for the benefit of their people. With Canadian and international partners, CIRDI provides leading-practice advice, technical support, training and applied research as well as a platform for innovative thinking, knowledge mobilization and shared learning. Our academic and operational independence enables us to act as a neutral convener in complex, multi-stakeholder environments.
