As part of IGF’s support to Cameroon’s Ministry of Mines, Industry, and Technological Development (MINMIDT), a training session on environmental management in the ASM sector was held in Yaoundé and Bertoua from August 19 to 22, 2024. The training aimed to impart techniques for environmental management, rehabilitation methods, and mercury-free and cyanide-free mining, with examples from similar environments.
Led by IGF experts, the workshop involved 17 participants from various MINMIDT offices, engaging in interactive sessions on environmental and socio-economic challenges within ASM in Cameroon. Case studies on best environmental practices provided practical context, and the training concluded with a site visit to the Kambélé mine in Bertoua, allowing participants to witness artisanal mining operations firsthand.
The key takeaways from the training can be divided into Challenges in the ASM Sector, and the Possible Next Steps for Collaboration.
Challenges in the ASM Sector:
- lack of environmental studies and management plans
- absence of a strategic approach through specific regulations
- exposure to health and safety hazards like mercury
- lack of PPE equipment and sanitation facilities
- limited government capacity to monitor and enforce regulations
Possible Next Steps for Future Collaboration:
- conduct comprehensive assessments: Initiate assessments to identify priority areas for policy-making within the ASM sector
- enhance capacity building: implement capacity-building initiatives aimed at strengthening the skills and knowledge of ASM stakeholders
- support legislative processes and implementation: provide technical support and expertise to support the development and implementation of legislative reforms related to ASM
