Date:
May 28, 2024 to January 01, 1970
Location:
Dakar, Senegal

The IGF supported Senegal’s Ministry of the Environment and Ecological Transition in delivering a two-day mine closure and rehabilitation workshop.

The program included sessions designed to equip attendees with the knowledge and skills to effectively plan and implement mine closure and rehabilitation, emphasizing early planning, community engagement, environmental and chemical stability, and financial assurance.

Forty participants attended the training, including officials from the environment, mining, land, water, and customs authorities. Mining company representatives and officials from national laboratories and major universities also completed the program.

During the training, government officials agreed to establish an inter-ministerial working group on rehabilitation and mine closure as a first step toward developing a national mine closure strategy and guidance on implementing mine rehabilitation plans. Representatives from the environment ministry expressed that the knowledge gained will inform subsequent trainings in other regions of Senegal.
